Trailer full of cats abandoned near Shuswap-area lake

CHASE, B.C. — RCMP in the Shuswap say a travel trailer full of cats was found abandoned on a forest service road last week.

In a news release, Chase RCMP say the incident happened last Saturday (Nov. 18).

The detachment received several reports of a suspicious flat deck truck hauling a travel trailer along Squilax-Anglemont Road. Callers reported cats falling out of the trailer as it was being hauled down the road.

Responding officers tried to pull the rig over, but it sped away and police ruled out a pursuit for safety reasons.

The trailer was eventually tracked to a forest service road near Skimikin Lake east of Chase, where it was found abandoned.

Mounties at the scene found “a significant number” of cats in and around the trailer, prompting animal rescue volunteers to spend several hours in the dark recovering the felines.

The trailer was later towed to an impound lot.

Both the RCMP and BC SPCA are following up on the incident.
