KAMLOOPS — Thompson Rivers University (TRU) has expanded its international academic network by signing three Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with leading universities in central Mexico.

In a news release issued Tuesday (Nov. 21), the institution announced TRU President Dr. Brett Fairbairn, Vice-President International Baihua Chadwick and Special Advisor Colin Doerr recently travelled to five different cities in Mexico to build partnerships in the region.

Additionally, the delegation also met with the Mexican secretariat of public education, the federal government authority and AMEXCID, an international cooperation agency.

TRU signed three MOUs with the Ministry of Education, Guanajuato State, Universidad Tecnológica de León and Universidad Tecnológica de San Miguel de Allende.

These memorandums will generate future educational partnership opportunities and facilitate international student programs and exchange.

“I am impressed by TRU’s new partners in the state of Guanajuato, and particularly by their commitment to internationalization. These partnerships will open interesting opportunities in new fields for TRU faculty and students,” said Fairbairn.

TRU’s delegation also stated they took the opportunity to inspect the environmental state of the region and the impacts of climate change.

In a speech at the University of Guanajuato, Fairbairn emphasized on the responsibility of institutions around the world to raise awareness and tackle the issue of climate change.
