Hotel occupancy has softened over the last year: Kamloops Accommodation Association

KAMLOOPS — From leisure travelers to tour companies, Kamloops hotels have seen it all. However, over the last year, the Kamloops Accommodation Association says occupancy has softened by about five per cent. According to the association’s chair, the change in numbers could be due to economic times.

“I think some people are bracing, potentially, for there to be a recession. I don’t know that it’s necessarily here, but you do hear speak people speaking of it, and they’re just a little bit more cautious,” explained Angela Tasker.

This past wildfire season broke records province-wide. Despite the smoky summer, Tasker said city hotels and motels did not see a decrease in visitors.

“We did have evacuees and some firefighters, but not so much that it filled the hotels,” she said. “We actually did need our regular transit business coming through, our leisure travelers and the tour companies like Rocky Mountain, coming through to give us kind of a normal season.”

Going into winter, Tasker reminded people there is still a lot to do in Kamloops during the off-season.

“We do see people come in from the smaller communities. They will come and spend a couple of nights and hit the shops, maybe go to Aberdeen Mall or do some downtown shops and, you know, get to enjoy a pool or hot tub and maybe a snack and a cocktail in the bar.”

Regardless what season you come to spend in Kamloops, there will always be something to explore.
