SALMON ARM, B.C. — The province has named a newly built bridge in Salmon Arm after a highly respected Neskonlith elder.

The Dr. Mary Thomas Bridge lies over the Salmon River on the Trans Canada Highway, near De Mille’s Farm Market on the west end of the city. It was officially dedicated by Transportation Minister Rob Fleming and Neskonlith officials Friday (Oct. 27).

Thomas, who passed away in 2007, is known for her leadership in the fields of early childhood development and ethnobotany.

“Dr. Thomas left such an important legacy when it comes to the environment, preservation of Indigenous language and culture and social development,” said Fleming in a news release. “The naming of this bridge near the community in which Dr. Thomas was raised will be a reminder of her important accomplishments.”
