WolfPack men’s soccer heads to Calgary with Canada West redemption front of mind

KAMLOOPS – It was toques and jackets at TRU men’s soccer practice this week. The chilly wind blowing through Hillside Stadium wasn’t only a preview of what’s in store for the WolfPack this weekend, as they head to Calgary for the Canada West playoffs. It brought back some fond memories of last year’s frigid U SPORTS finals on this pitch.

“It totally does. We’ve been talking about it all day, to be honest,” graduating forward Jost Hausendorf reminisces. “And also because of the snow in Calgary we heard of today. You know what? It’s bringing back good vibes — not bad memories to have, to be honest, especially going into this weekend.”

The WolfPack are a confident bunch heading into their match with the top-seeded team from the Prairie Division. The MRU Cougars finished the season with 11 wins, two losses and a draw this year, and have gone undefeated in their final five games of the regular season.

However, after starting the season without a win — or a goal — in their first five games, the ‘Pack rattled off a 7-2-1 record to punch their ticket to the playoffs.

“[Our] desire to win and that cohesiveness that we have, it showed in the end,” fifth-year forward Patrick Izett says. “You’ve seen the hard work we put in here at training, week in, week out. It was just a matter of time before things started to go the way we wanted them to.”

However, even with the ‘Pack rounding into form down the stretch, it’ll take a full team effort if they hope to steal a win from the hosts this weekend.

“In general, they’re a really good team. A really strong team, with really diverse players — fast players, technically sound players, and really well-set by the coach,” Hausendorf explains. “Just by their record, you can tell that’s a really tough challenge to be up to.”

Despite winning the 2023 U SPORTS Championships on home turf, the leadership group of the WolfPack still believes they have something to prove. They know how tough it is to win Canada West and are prepared for that grind.

“It’s a gruelling process. It’s extremely hard work. We fell short last year in the playoffs, itself, in Canada West,” Izett says. “Ultimately, that’s our goal this year. We want to perform in Canada West because that gets you into Nationals. You can’t think that far ahead right now, focus on one thing at a time, but with that experience last year at Nationals, for sure, it just helps prepare guys mentally for what it takes.”

A victory against the top team in U SPORTS, the UBC Thunderbirds on October 13 at Thunderbird Stadium, no less, has certainly solidified the belief that these players have that they can beat anyone, anywhere.
