NSBIA’s Clean Team program nominated for inclusivity award

KAMLOOPS — The North Shore Business Improvement Association’s (NSBIA) Clean Team program has been going so well, it earned the organization a nomination for an award through the Open Door Group.

The NSBIA was recently nominated for the 2023 Untapped Awards as an Inclusive Culture Champion. The Clean Team program — initially launched as a 20-week pilot project in 2022 — provides steady employment for people with complex needs or lived experience with homelessness.

“Part of the reason we’re doing the Clean Team is to take people who are perhaps not positively perceived in our community and say, ‘How do we change that stigma? How do we change that focus?'” explains NSBIA Executive Director Jeremy Heighton.

The Untapped Awards took place Friday (Oct. 13), and while the NSBIA did not win in its nomination category, the association expressed gratitude for the nomination on its Facebook page.

The Clean Team is currently funded through a blend of sponsorships, grants and provincial money. As it grows, Heighton says the city is contemplating adding Clean Team funding to the civic budget next year.
