KAMLOOPS–The mayor of Kamloops and seven city councillors are in Vancouver this week for the Union of BC’s Municipalities (UBCM) conference.

On Tuesday night (Sept. 19), the city representatives and Tkemlups Chief Rosanne Casimir were given the President’s Committee Choice award for Building Relationships Towards Reconciliation.

“It was a very special moment and to get to share that the stage with with Kukpi7 Rosanne and the recognition of the hard work that’s been going on for, you know six or seven years,” Kamloops city councillor Mike O’Reilly told CFJC News.

This isn’t something that we just came up with an idea, – ‘let’s try and have a better relationship of First Nations. This has been very purposeful and intentional and we’re very proud of that.”

The President’s Committee Choice Award was introduced in 2021 to recognize a community deserving of special recognition for excellence and outstanding achievement in a current issue faced by local governments.

This year the issue was Building Relationships Towards Reconciliation.

Kamloops received the award for the ongoing work between T’kemlups and the city.

“To be recognized by the province as a leader with the president’s award was very welcome last night and we were all collectively in a very happy place,” O’Reilly said.
