WILLIAMS LAKE, B.C. — A longtime chief and councillor for the Williams Lake First Nation (WLFN) has died.

In a Facebook post, WLFN announced the passing of Rick Gilbert.

Gilbert served as chief of the First Nation for 12 years between 1974 and 1992. After living away from the community for several years, he returned and was elected to council in 2012. He sat on council until his death.

“We are forever grateful for his wisdom, kindness, humor, and dedication to his community. He will be missed by many, and we will continue his legacy for a strong and resilient community,” says WLFN in the post.

Drumming for Gilbert will take place at Cariboo-Chilcotin Funeral Services on Sept. 18 at 11:00 a.m. prior to cremation. A service is planned for 11:00 a.m. on October 5 at Sacred Heart Church in Williams Lake, followed by a procession to the Chief William Powwow Arbour.
