KAMLOOPS — A provincial Ministry of Environment (MoE) official says it’s not believed a pink liquid draining into Guerin Creek Monday (Sept. 11) is dangerous to humans.

MoE and Kamloops Fire Rescue were called to the area of Guerin Creek near the Thompson Rivers University campus Monday after a member of the public noticed the strange liquid in the creek.

Officials are looking into the incident, including the potential sources.

An MoE official who spoke to CFJC Today says there does not appear to be an immediate threat to human health. Samples of the liquid are now being taken for further testing.

“At present it is not an immediate risk but we want to know more. We have taken some samples so we can find out a bit more information about it,” said Toby Gritten, Emergency Response Officer.

The team collected a number of samples from the creek which they hope will allow them to find the source of the pink colour. It was noted that blocking off the creek to prevent spread was not a feasible option.

“It is going to spread. There is not much we can do to stop it because it is very mixable with water. We can’t dam it or anything like that because we don’t want to cause flooding further down stream,” added Gritten.
