TNRD meeting with 70 Mile House residents to discuss fire department funding
70 MILE HOUSE, B.C. — Residents of a small Cariboo community will meet with the Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) to learn how potentially having a fire department would impact them.
In a news release, the TNRD says it will present the results of a feasibility study looking into administering and funding a volunteer fire department in 70 Mile House at an information meeting Monday (Sept. 11) evening. The district says its representatives will also present the share costs and tax impacts of the proposed fire service.
Currently, the 70 Mile Volunteer Fire Department is an associate-run operation that’s partially funded by the TNRD. The TNRD says it collects $30,000 per year though a grant-in-aid service to fund the association.
“The current grant-in-aid amount ($30,000) is not sufficient to run a TNRD administered department because we must adhere to equipment and training standards set by the Office of the Fire Commissioner (OFC) playbook. These standards cannot be met on such a small budget,” the TNRD states.
