Ancestral remains found along the Thompson River; site considered sacred: Tḱemlúps

TK’EMLUPS — Tḱemlúps te Secwépemc and the City of Kamloops are working to protect a site along the Thompson River where ancestral remains were found on Saturday (Sept. 2).
In a news release, Tḱemlúps and the City are asking the public to respect the location where the remains were found as it is now considered a sacred site. The area is currently closed, and the public is asked to avoid it so Tḱemlúps and the City can complete their work.
“Cultural heritage is an important value for Tḱemlúps and we have a responsibility to ensure that our cultural and traditional practices are being respected,” Tḱemlúps Kukpi7 Rosanne Casimir states. “Our people have been here since time immemorial and travelled extensively throughout Secwepemcúl’ecw.”
Additionally, Kamloops Councillor Bill Sarai – Chair of the City’s Reconciliation Select Committee – says they’re upholding the Letter of Understanding signed between the City and Tḱemlúps that respects the formalizations of a cultural heritage protocol.
