Planned ignitions being done at Ross Moore Lake wildfire
KAMLOOPS — Hand ignitions are being done on the eastern side of the Ross Moore Lake wildfire in an effort to contain the flames. The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) says the fire has had more recent stability than others in the region, but it is still considered out of control.
According to BCWS Fire Information Officer, Forrest Tower, the planned ignitions are being done with drip torches. “What we are trying to do with planned ignitions is removing a bunch of those fuels, so that is burning right to guards. So we are burning out from a guard, into a fire. In that way, if we do have winds or other events, if the fire continues to burn, there is no fuel left for that fire, cause we’ve removed it.”
The Ross Moore Lake wildfire is estimated around 78 thousand hectares. There are currently 122 firefighters on the ground, along with heavy equipment.
