KAMLOOPS — Residents in Kamloops are being affected by smoke rising from the ongoing wildfires around the region. Those most vulnerable are those with pre-existing health conditions, however nearly everyone is feeling the effects of the smoke today.

Dr. Fatemeh Sabet is a medical health officer at Interior Health and says the best way to keep yourself safe is by staying indoors as much as possible. “We believe that the quality of air indoors is better than outdoors. Close the door and at the same time, make sure the temperature indoors is comfortable and safe enough for everyone to stay indoors,” she explained.

However, if people do need to go outdoors, Dr. Sabet said there are a few things they can do to mitigate the impacts of the smoke. “When people need to go outdoors, they need to reduce their physical activity as much as possible and check air quality health index – it has different messages for the general population and population at risk.”
