More evacuation orders and alerts to come after what firefighters call as “one of the most challenging nights”

KAMLOOPS – After what B.C. Wildfire Service (BCWS) calls as “one of the most challenging nights” for first responders this summer, they say winds are much lighter today and relative humidity overnight may diminish fire activity today.

However, due to high drought levels there is the change for continued aggressive fire behavior today.

On an update this morning, BCWS say heavy smoke is impacting visibility for fire growth and there will be expanded Evacuation Orders and Alerts today based on fire growth.

As of 8 a.m. Saturday (Aug. 19) morning, the Bush Creek East wildfire has burned across of Highway 1 between Chase and Sorrento and there is an evacuation order where fire has impacted Highway 1 and in the Turtle Valley area. Highway 1 remains closed.

BCWS also say the Lower East Adams Lake wildfire is still north of Lee Creek and has not moved into the community, at this time. However, the fire has moved into Scotch Creek and as far east as north of Celista, where impacts are currently being assessed.

“The BC Wildfire Service is working as hard as possible to facilitate safe access to impacted areas for local authorities to do rapid damage assessments,” said BCWS website.

Information about structure impact will be shared through local authorities as it is confirmed and made available.
