KAMLOOPS — The Thompson Nicola Regional District (TNRD) substantially expanded its evacuation order due to the danger from the Ross Moore Lake wildfire south of Kamloops.

In a news release issued Thursday (Aug. 17) evening, the TNRD says an evacuation order is now in effect for nearly 40 properties within Electoral Areas J (Copper Desert Country) and L (Grasslands). That’s up from two properties as of Thursday morning.

The properties impacted are:

  • 5140 Lac Le Jeune Rd.
  • 5240 Lac Le Jeune Rd.
  • 6388 to 6416 Ashley Rd.
  • 5115 to 5380 Jackson Rd.
  • 4680 to 6455 Long Lake Rd.
  • 5465 to 5585 Mannings Rd.
  • 5960 to 6381 Weir Rd.

Anyone in the red area must leave immediately. Residents who need to evacuate can register for emergency support services (ESS) online and report to the reception centre at 1655 Island Parkway in Kamloops, although the TNRD asks residents to make arrangements to stay with family or friends if possible.

The updated evacuation order comes after the TNRD added nine properties to its evacuation alert in response to the Ross Moore Lake wildfire Thursday morning. The Thompson and Nicola regions are expected to face dry lightning and gusty winds Thursday and Friday.

The BC Wildfire Service issued an area restriction near the Ross Moore Lake wildfire earlier Thursday.

Winds are expected to change, possibly resulting in an even worse wildfire situation for the province.

TNRD residents can track evacuation updates here.

Guidelines on what to do in an evacuation is available online.
