Underground mining resumes at New Afton mine following engineering review
KAMLOOPS — Underground mining activities have resumed at the New Afton copper-gold mine just west of Kamloops.
In a news release Friday (Aug. 11) morning, New Gold Inc. – the international mining company that operates the mine – says normal underground mining resumed Thursday night after a thorough engineering review.
New Gold suspended underground mining after regular inspections of the New Afton mine’s tailings storage facility on Wednesday showed “visual geotechnical variances” that required furthering engineering review. Since then, the company says the engineers confirmed the mine’s structural integrity and behaviour is normal and expected.
New Gold says milling operations were unaffected at the New Afton mine and in-pit tailings disposal continued. The company adds New Afton remains well positioned to meet all annual production and cost guidance metrics as set out earlier in the year.
