Accommodations identified for Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc members in case of evacuation
KAMLOOPS — The provincial government has announced a partnership with Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc that will provide members of the First Nation with culturally safe accommodations in the case of an evacuation.
The temporary accommodation will have room for up to 300 people and is located in Rayleigh. It is expected to be operational by August 16. “In the face of the ever-growing threat of wildfires, our community members recognize the significance of being proactive and ready to face any challenge that may arise,” said Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc Kúkpi7 Rosanne Casimir.
The move is being made in recognition that B.C. is in the peak of the tourism season where hotel rooms are limited. “Evacuating from your home is difficult and stressful. The last thing evacuees should have to worry about is whether they will have a safe place to stay,” said Bowinn Ma, Minister of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness.
The location will have space to support smudging and prayer. “By working together, we’re ensuring that people have a place to retreat in the unfortunate event that they need to evacuate,” added Ma.
