Kamloops prepares for tight water restrictions next week

KAMLOOPS — Starting next Monday (Aug. 14), Kamloops will be implementing extreme watering restrictions. The decision came after the province moved to drought Level 5 and historic low river levels were reported in the region.

“We will be banning all outdoor irrigating and we’ll be banning pressure washing and vehicle washing, unless done in a car wash, where there’s more efficient use of the water,” said Greg Wightman, City of Kamloops Utility Services Manager.

Maury Hik, owner of Art Knapp Garden Centre, explained people should not panic as there are a few things residents can do to keep their gardens and lawns healthy, even with water restrictions.

“The key to everything when it comes to watering is good deep soakings. And that will get the moisture nice and low. The weather can change, but the roots will be consistently moisture,” he explained.

Hik also said that setting the lawn up higher as well as leaving the thatch on the lawn can help shade the root system so it can tolerate the heat.

According to Wightman, the city’s goal is to reduce water consumption by 25 per cent. Spray parks will remain open as part of the city’s heat response plan.
