City of Kamloops nabs seized sports car through provincial grant, will use it to illustrate perils of criminal lifestyle

KAMLOOPS — The City of Kamloops vehicle fleet includes plenty of pickup trucks and compact cars — and now it includes a luxury sports car.

In a news release, the city says it has acquired a 2008 Porsche Cayman, a two-seater coupe provided to the city by a provincial grant through the B.C. Civil Forfeiture Profits of Crime program.

Community Education and Prevention Coordinator Amy Hilliard says the Porsche will not be sweeping streets or charioting Community Services Officers to their calls. Instead, Hilliard says it will be incorporated into the city’s Guns and Gangs Intervention and Prevention Program “to show that while the gang lifestyle may appear to be luxurious, it is far from it.”

Hilliard notes the car was seized after being identified as a criminal asset.

“The Guns and Gangs program is a series of initiatives and education that we are developing with key partners and experts to prevent and intervene in youths entering the guns and gang lifestyle,” said Hilliard in the news release. “The Porsche is a piece of our tool kit that will come with us to events and education opportunities to help reinforce the message to youths that involvement in drug or gang crime is serious and that assets, including one’s life, become targeted and vulnerable.”

The vehicle’s first public appearance will happen at Hot Nite in the City, this Saturday (Aug. 12) in downtown Kamloops.
