SOUND OFF: Getting hay to B.C. farmers

Aug 2, 2023 | 10:49 AM

FARMERS AND RANCHERS ARE FACING a difficult summer as drought conditions continue to create a shortage of hay and feed all across Western Canada. This is causing unexpected costs and forcing tough decisions for many B.C. farmers and their families.

We’ve been talking to those impacted, listening to their concerns, and we’re taking action. We’re working to find all available sources of feed, whether in Canada or internationally, and get it to the animals who need it.

Our government is partnering with the BC Cattleman’s Association to find and match sellers of hay and feed with farmers and ranchers in need. BCCA will also co-ordinate feed requests from other livestock sectors and smaller producers.

B.C.’s agricultural producers pride themselves on being self-sufficient and know what works best for them. And in times like these, it is important to listen and collaborate. We know that a strong agricultural sector is important, not only for strong rural communities but for the food security of everyone in B.C. That’s why we’re stepping up to help.

Recognizing that many farmers and ranchers have specific needs for their animals, we want to help them get access to feed that meets their individual situations and allow them to make the best decisions for their operations.

We’re also working with the federal government to strengthen existing support program to help farmers with increased feed costs. Immediate help is available through the federal-provincial AgriStability program to help with income decline related to the drought or wildfires.

Farmers who are already part of the AgriStability program will be contacted about receiving targeted advance payments. Those who aren’t yet participating in the program can still enroll now. Approved payments can be in the hands of producers within 10 businesses days, to help provide the cashflow needed to cover necessary expenses.

Additionally, we’ve made changes to crop insurance so producers can now write off grain and oilseed crops that are being converted into livestock feed, in response to the drought conditions.

Farmers who need assistance with any of these programs can contact the AgriService BC line at 1-888-221-7141.

I know that farmers and ranchers in B.C. are resilient and have come through challenging times before. I’m grateful for all of those across the province who have taken the time to share their thoughts and perspectives with me. And I want to especially thank everyone who is helping out their neighbours right now. By working together and looking out for each other, we can get through this.
