Kamloops Fire Rescue advising residents to take precautions amid heat warning

KAMLOOPS — As the heat continues to hover over the Interior, Kamloops Fire Rescue is asking residents to be cautious when going to parks.

“Everything is dry now,” Cpt. Jamie Chase with KFR told CFJC Today. “The predictions that we’ve been making since the springtime have all come true and we’re in the middle of fire season now. Everything is hot and dry now as most people know. It’s been a record-breaking year across Canada.”

Chase is also advising people to take proper precautions when going to places like Kenna Cartwright Park. That means not throwing cigarette butts on the ground.

“Unfortunately, a few smokers out there are habitual litterbugs and at this time of the year they don’t even know they’re doing it — that they’re butting a cigarette out on the ground,” said Chase. “Even if they pick it up, they’re leaving embers behind.”

Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for the southern Interior, with daytime high temperatures ranging from 35 to 38 degrees.

“The problem is the southern Interior looks to remain dry this week and into early next week as well,” meteorologist from Environment Canada Ken Dosanjh stated. “It doesn’t look to be too much relief in sight for the southern Interior like Kamloops and the Okanagan.”

In response to the heat warning issued by Environment Canada, the City of Kamloops has opened up the Sandman Centre as a cooling space. It will operate between the hours of 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. until the end of the heat event.
