Eight-year-old Kamloops golfer prepares for a second shot at World Junior Championship event

KAMLOOPS — Many golfers have clubs older than Everett Quewezance. Although he’s just eight years old, he’s grown up around the game thanks to his Dad, Joe.

“When he was around a-year-and-a-half, he was just swinging, hitting balls in the basement,” Joe Quewezance explains. “The following summer, his Grandpa bought him a set of real clubs – real short ones – and I started bringing him to the course with me. Just hitting the range, really. A lot of chipping and putting.”

He’s only been golfing for five years, but the little dude can swing it.

“I like to shoot well, play good, and have fun,” Everett explains.

Later this week, Everett and Joe will head down to San Diego for the IMG Academy World Junior Championships, where Everett will play some of the other top golfers in his age group from across the world. It’ll be Everett’s second trip to this event.

“I was super afraid because I was the youngest one there,” Everett tells CFJC Today. This time around, he says he’ll be more confident as a result of that experience last year.

“His work ethic, and wanting to get back there. Just making sure he can be ready and play better than he did last year, I think that’s his own pressure and what he wants to do,” Joe explains. “We’ve got that [event] and then two weeks later we’re off to North Carolina for the US Kids World Championships.”

For now, Joe also serves as Everett’s coach. The two play as often as they can at Tobiano, and work on those little things that can make the difference in your golf game. However, they also strive for balance.

“We made sure he didn’t swing a club at all, through the winter, and just making sure there’s a balance between being a kid and being a golfer,” Joe says. “Playing tournaments at the world level, some of these kids are playing golf 12 months out of the year. We make sure he gets a lot of playtime with his buddies but also gets in a lot of work and practice at the course during the golf season.”

These summer days out at the course are what Everett loves to do.

“I like playing with my Dad and having fun,” he explains.

“He’s got a passion for the game. He wants to work,” Joe says. “He puts a lot of pressure on himself, which we’re trying to adjust, take that away, but also nurture it as well. In golf and in life.”

And despite his incredible drive and skill set for such a young age, Everett is just like the rest of us hackers out there. What frustrates him?

“Missing a short putt for birdie.”
