KAMLOOPS — Thompson Rivers University’s president will be sticking around a while longer.

The school’s Board of Governors has approved a two-year extension to Brett Fairbairn’s contract, appointing him to serve in the position until June 30, 2025.

In a news release, Board Chair Marilyn McLean praised Fairbairn’s “unwavering commitment to propelling TRU forward.”

“The Board recognizes and is greatly appreciative of what the university has accomplished under Dr. Fairbairn’s leadership. Among his many accomplishments is the Envision project which he initiated within his first year at TRU,” said McLean.

McLean said the decision to extend Fairbairn was made after a comprehensive review process.

She noted the board wanted to extend Fairbairn’s appointment further, but Fairbairn has told the board he and his wife wish to retire and pursue other interests as of two years from now.

“I wish I could give more than two years of my time,” said Fairbairn, “but there are things my wife and I want to do on a personal level – for us, as well as for and with our families, our friends, and the community in which we live.”

Fairbairn arrived in Kamloops in December 2018, taking over from the retiring Dr. Alan Shaver.

“TRU holds a special place in my heart, especially because I was made to feel welcome right from the start almost five years ago,” said Fairbairn. “I am honoured to be given the opportunity by the Board of Governors to continue to serve as president,”
