NorthPaws hope home cooking can nurture success

KAMLOOPS — After an unsuccessful start to their season, the Kamloops NorthPaws have returned home to play their first series of the year at Norbrock Stadium. The ‘Paws dropped three straight in the provincial capital to the HarbourCats, but if Kamloops’ short history is any indication, some home cooking is just what the doctor ordered.

It was a true Jekyll and Hyde story last season for the NorthPaws, who won 12 more games at home than on the road, nine of those via the walk-off. Kamloops native Nolan Austin was a part of those big wins a year ago, and expects more of the same this season.

“There was nothing like it last year and I know because of the success we had it’s going to be just as good if not better. It’s exciting to be back home and playing in front of everyone here. It’s going to be a lot of fun,” said Austin.

New head coach Keith Francis hasn’t had a chance to see and hear a home crowd at Norbrock Stadium. After seeing his team fight back in Victoria over the past weekend, he’s excited to see them feed off the home crowd.

“I’m hoping to come out early this week, especially after the struggles we had on the road. And I think they will, they’ll bounce back well and they did in Victoria. They had a horrible first night and bounced back hard the next two nights,” said Francis. “I don’t expect it will be any different here. I think with the crowd behind us and our home field, I think we will do very well.”

Austin Coyle had the chance to experience the NorthPaws faithful as member of the opposition last season, playing with Kelowna. Now back home in Kamloops, he’s happy to have them on his side.

“You look at the Kamloops Blazers and the amount of support they’ve gotten this last couple weeks at the Memorial Cup. I’m excited because that same group of fans is going to be at our games, cheering for us. I really love the support and the home environment we get from our fans in Kamloops and I’m really excited to get to play for them,” said Coyle.

The team has shown flashes of brilliance already this season, but will need to put it all together to find success. For Francis, success comes from confidence in all aspects of the game.

“Very aggressive, aggressive on the bases, aggressive at the plate, and hopefully we can start throwing a lot more strikes than we have been throwing. That’s for sure,” said Francis.

First pitch flies Tuesday night (June 6) just after 6:30 P.M. as the NorthPaws welcome the Portland Pickles to Kamloops.
