KAMLOOPS — It’s an option people take when commuting to their destination. Go By Bike Week is a provincial initiative that encourages people to leave their car at home and try active transportation methods.

“Getting people any mode of transportation that doesn’t include your car is great,” cycling Initiatives Coordinator Stacey Gagnon told CFJC Today. “Whether it’s a scooter, a bike, your feet, roller blades, or skateboard.”

The initiative began in 1995 in Victoria as a Bike to Work Week. It has since spread into more.

“You kinda see the landscape a lot differently than when you’re in a car,” Cyclist Graham Macgregor told CFJC Today.

“The fact that I for instance, ride a cruiser that doesn’t even have gears, everything is nice and flat,” said Shayse Wilson, who bikes to work. “It’s nice because downtown there’s so many opportunities to get out biking, to go to restaurants and go to the park so it’s just convenient instead of finding parking.”

The benefits of registering as a rider are endless. Once you go to Gobybike.ca, you’re eligible to win prizes. “There a lot of provincial prizes to be had,” said Gagnon. “The grand prize is a trip for two to Croatia to go on a cycle trip which in my opinion is amazing.”

Go By Bike Week will end June 4th.
