BC Wildfire Service asks the public to be vigilant this long weekend

“If you’re planning to enjoy the outdoors this weekend, we just want to remind everyone to be vigilant, and be careful when you’re in the backcountry and in areas around the Kamloops Fire Centre,” Melanie Bibeau, Kamloops Fire Centre Fire Information Officer suggests. “Ensure that if you have a campfire, you have adequate fire suppression on site, that you have water and a hand tool, and that you ensure your ashes are cool to the touch before you vacate the area.”

While there’s no official start to wildfire season, the Fire Danger Rating in the Kamloops Fire Centre was considered moderate as of Friday (May 19) afternoon.

Even though there are some cooler temperatures in the forecast for later in the weekend, the BCWS asks everyone to keep their eyes peeled and report any wildfires they come across.

“If you do happen to see a wildfire, we just want to encourage people to use our *5555 line or you can use the BC Wildfire Mobile app,” Bibeau says. “The app also has a feature that allows you to input a photo of the wildfire, so that even if you are unsure of the exact location you are in, it can be geo-referenced to provide a better reference to our operations teams, as well.”
