Forecasters predict extreme heat for the Kamloops area this weekend

KAMLOOPS – Kamloops is are looking at an anomalous heat this weekend.

According to Environment Canada, weekend temperatures are expected to reach the mid-30s during the day — however, it shouldn’t cause a heat advisory.

“It will be very hot. The UV index will be very high, so put on that sunscreen. But luckily overnight in the first half of May or mid-May, the overnight temperatures will recover so we will go below the criteria for heat warnings,” Environment Canada meteorologist Armel Castellan told CFJC News. “This should keep indoor air temperatures relatively normal, and won’t get into really dangerous areas.”

While these out-of-the-ordinary temperatures may not warrant a heat warning, they could have a significant impact on the environment. Castellan said, so far, the freshet has only included the mid-elevation snow, which leads into smaller waterways.

“Now, we are really gonna be shifting into higher elevations still in the mountains, so were are not only talking about the medium-sized watersheds like the Bonaparte, the Cache Creek, and so on, but also the bigger ones like the Thompson, the South Thompson, Fraser River,” he said. “Those are the river systems that feed off the higher elevation snow and will be starting to really show their melt waters in streams and rivers in this case.”

CFJC News reached out to the BC River Forecast Centre for comment on how that snow melt will affect the surrounding communities but we did not hear back by our deadline.
