Blazers’ blueliners know the key to success against Seattle is hard work

KAMLOOPS — Tuesday’s (May 2) 4-1 win over Seattle in Game 3 of the Western Conference Championship series was the biggest of the year for the Blazers. Game 4 Thursday night at the Sandman Centre is another near-must-win scenario for the Blazers

“They’re a good team, they’re going to push,” Kyle Masters says. “We need to stick to our structure — you mentioned earlier, bending, not breaking, and I think that was a huge part of it.”

The Blazers’ defence has been depleted after plus/minus leader Logan Bairos exited Game 1 early. Ryan Micheal drew into the lineup for game two after coming off a hand injury but didn’t make it through the entire 60 minutes. It’s just a part of playoff hockey.

“It’s kind of just the next man up mentality we’ve got right now,” explained Ethan Brandwood. “Obviously, younger guys are having to play a bit more of a role, and they’ve worked hard this year to be ready. They’re filling in just fine.”

Kamloops surrendered just 23 shots on goal on Tuesday, the lowest total through the first three games. Defending against this high-powered Seattle offence comes down to one important factor.

“We’ve just got to continue to play hard,” Masters says. “I think that’s a big thing and it’s obviously hard to do over a seven-game series. That’s something we as a d-core need to continue to do.”

The Blazers know Seattle will be hungry to exact a measure of revenge for that loss Tuesday night.

“Obviously we’re going to expect a pushback from them, but at the end of the day it’s about us,” Brandwood says. “We’re looking to attack the game the same way we did [Tuesday] night, come in with the same mindset. Obviously, it will be a close game, and we’re looking to push them out of it eventually, and come out on top.”
