KAMLOOPS – Four of the adult dogs seized from a backyard breeder in Clearwater are now up for adoption in Kamloops.

When the 15 dogs first came in, many were extremely emaciated. The seven young puppies were quickly adopted, but Onix, Bear, Callie and Sitka were to be held until the BC Farm Industry Review Board (BCFIRB) delivered a verdict involving the breeder. They needed constant care before finding a new home.

“It’s been amazing. The muscle tone that they all have now, their hip bones aren’t as noticeable, and the energy they’ve all gained with constant access to good food, has been incredible,” Angela Henshaw from the Kamloops BC SPCA told CFJC News.

The breeder responsible for their neglect is facing charges of animal abuse. After his day with BCFIRB, the board ruled none of his dogs would be returned to him.

These four have made strides in their recovery. They are now ready to be adopted and shelter staff couldn’t be happier with their progress.

“That was the end goal, right? To get them to be adopted, it was definitely hard at the beginning,” Henshaw said.

“I’ve been here for several years, and it was probably one of the worst cases I’ve ever seen. I’m very thankful I got to be a part of their recovery and I’ve gotten very attached, and it’s going to be bittersweet when it’s time for adoption, but like I said, that is the ultimate goal.”
