With Scotties wrapped, Memorial Cup planning kicks into high gear

KAMLOOPS — With the Scotties Tournament of Hearts now in the rearview mirror, all eyes are on the upcoming Memorial Cup in Kamloops. The event that pits the four best junior hockey teams in the nation against each other over 10 days is just 85 days away from taking over the tournament capital.

As the tournament approaches, the host committee held an event on Wednesday (March 1) to promote some of the events and activities, such as music concerts and the Molson Hockey House, that will run alongside the games.

Kamloops Blazers President Norm Daley stated that the idea is to create a full-fledged event — not just a hockey tournament.

“That’s what this is all about. We are trying to show Kamloops — making it shine, as we say — and moving all these events forward. We are going to have concerts, an entertainment zone, lots to do throughout the community, free events and things like that. We are really excited about the program we’ve put together and the tremendous support we’ve received from the sponsors, the volunteers and also from ticket holders who have purchased up tickets as well,” said Daley.

Full tournament ticket packages are still on sale, with limited selection available. Daley noted that smaller ticket packages will be opened up to the public in April, with single-game ticket sales dependent on stock.

“We are going to go out with two-packs, starting in early April. That will be a Blazers game together with one of the other games during the round robin and then will also include the final. We will have some two-packs available in April and then, depending on the results from that, we would have individual tickets going on in May,” added Daley.

The Memorial Cup runs from May 26 to June 4.
