KAMLOOPS — A robbery attempt led to car crash in downtown Kamloops last night.

In a news release, RCMP say it happened just before 8:00 p.m. Wednesday night (Feb. 22), near the 400-block of Nicola Street.

Officers responded and found a vehicle crashed and rolled, with two men heard fighting outside. One of them was yelling to call 911. Another was seen fleeing on foot with visible injuries.

“Multiple police officers responded and found the owner of the crashed vehicle, who alleged a man had tried to rob him and an altercation occurred inside his vehicle, which caused his vehicle to collide with two other vehicles, then flip over,” said detachment spokesperson Cpl. Crystal Evelyn.

The suspect took off on foot down Battle Street before departing in another vehicle. He was eventually tracked down with the help of Salmon Arm RCMP in Tappen. He was taken into custody and transported to hospital for treatment of injuries.

Evelyn notes the man was also found to be wanted on a Canada-wide warrant.

Back in Kamloops, the victim was taken to hospital, treated and released.

“Thanks to the fast response of the officers attending and the assistance of the Salmon Arm RCMP Detachment, police were able to quickly take a suspect into custody and the investigation is progressing well, with assistance provided to the frontline officers by the local Forensic Identification Services Unit and General Investigations Support Team,” added Evelyn.

Anyone with further information on the incident is asked to contact Kamloops RCMP at (250) 828-3000 and refer to file number 2023-6241.
