Jennifer Jones chases Scotties history with next generation of curlers

“They are awesome. They are just great people. They work hard — they just love the game, They love the game like I love the game. It’s just a privilege to share the ice with them,” said Jones.

The youthful talent on Team Jones comes from three curlers who won the world championship at the junior level together in 2020.

“Jen was at the first Scotties that we ever went to. We didn’t get to play them at that event, unfortunately, but they were really kind to us as well while we were there. Now to get the chance to play with her at a Scotties is a dream come true,” said Mackenzie Zacharias.

Zacharias has been to the Scotties twice before, serving as the skip of Team Manitoba in 2022 and as a wild card entrant in 2021. With Jones joining the team, the eldest of two Zacharias sisters on the team has moved down to second.

“It’s a lot different — more different than I expected it to be. The sweeping has been great. It has been a new challenge for me. The shots are semi-similar. It’s been a new experience — especially being at a Scotties not playing skip, but I’m enjoying it,” said Zacharias.

Zacharias, who grew up watching Jones curl at an elite level, is still amazed by her skip’s ability to deliver in big moment, like the 10th end on Tuesday (Feb. 21).

“When Jen has a tough one to make, she always makes it. There is never a doubt. To have her throwing the last stones is a real treat this year,” added Mackenzie.

Despite the noise around the Jones rink and the potential for history, the number seven hasn’t been a focus for the team.

“You are here really in the moment, trying to win this championship. I always said I will look at the record when I finally retire. Right now, it’s just about this event,” said Jones.

Team Manitoba played just once on Wednesday (Feb. 22), defeating Cassey Scheidegger and Wild Card 2 to improve their record to 6-and-1 and securing a spot in the playoffs.
