KAMLOOPS — Set against the backdrop of the 19th biggest bonspiel in Ontario, Western Canada Theatre’s new production of Hurry Hard is set to open on February 24th.

On Tuesday, CFJC Today got to peek behind the curtain, as the cast rehearses the show ahead of opening night.

The comedy, written by Kristen Da Silva and directed by Catriona Leger, is set in Stayner, Ontario, and revolves around the tension and drama that exists between Sandy and Bill, a formerly married couple who still spend lots of time at the curling club.

“The day before the big regional bonspiel, one of Bill’s team members has suffered an injury, and he’s forced to ask [his ex-wife] Sandy to join the team,” Leger explains. “Hijinx and hilariousness occur — throw in Bill’s ne’er do well brother, Sandy’s best friend, a feisty hairdresser, and a really handsome young newcomer who has a very special power over women, and mayhem ensues.”

Kirk Smith plays Bill, who he describes as “nice to a fault.” Part of his character’s challenge is speaking up for himself in pursuit of what he wants.

“This may be [Bill’s] last chance to rekindle things with Sandy,” Smith says. ”Meanwhile, he has this brother, Terry. [Bill’s] sort of always taking care of him, sometimes to the detriment of his other relationships. You see him try and balance that — balance Terry with wanting to have a wife again.”

Hurry Hard runs from February 23 until March 3 at the Sagebrush Theatre. It’s no accident that a play about curling will run alongside the Scottie’s Tournament of Hearts.

“I think it’s really exciting to have the Scottie’s going on at the same time as Hurry Hard,” Leger says. “We definitely hope for some crossover in the audience. What curling fan wouldn’t want to come to see a play about curling?”
