Cliff Branchflower, mayor of Kamloops during the 1990s, dies

KAMLOOPS — Former Kamloops mayor Cliff Branchflower has died.

The City of Kamloops confirms Branchflower passed away at his home on Saturday (Feb. 11) at the age of 90.

Branchflower was the city’s mayor from 1991 to 1999, leading the city during one of its signature events — the Canada Summer Games in 1993.

Known as a soft-spoken, strong leader with a dry wit, prior to his political career, Branchflower was a type-setter for the Kamloops Sentinel.

Branchflower was given the City of Kamloops’ highest civilian honour, the Freedom of the City, in 2008.

Coincidentally, Branchflower died on the same day as former longtime Kamloops councillor Pat Wallace. Branchflower’s time as mayor coincided with Wallace’s time on council from 1993 to 1999.
