KAMLOOPS – The 2023 Special Olympics BC Winter Games will officially open Thursday (Feb. 2), with the opening ceremonies Tournament Capital Centre.

This marks the fifth time Kamloops has hosted provincial games for BC and Yukon athletes with intellectual disabilities.

Earlier Thursday, volunteers were busy preparing for the hundreds of guests who will be introduced at the TCC, starting at 6:30 p.m.

Competition in eight sports — including floor hockey, figure skating and skiing begins Friday morning at various locations in the city.

The athletes who are set to arrive Thursday will be supported by about 250 volunteer coaches and mission staff.

“Some of them are in town, some of them are still on buses some of them are flying in,” Jan Antons, 2023 SOBC Games chair told CFJC News.

“Everybody’s on a bus so we are quite excited everybody’s gonna make it even with the snow so we’re just waiting for some of them to still come in.”
