KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops Blazers took down the top team in the Western Hockey League (WHL) Western Conference during the team’s Indigenous Night Wednesday (Feb. 1) night from Sandman Centre.

Olen Zellweger set the tone and went coast-to-coast to give the Blazers an early 1-0 lead over the Portland Winterhawks.

The Blazers padded their lead in the second period with two goals: Kamloops local Dylan Sydor wristed the puck in the top corner on a partial breakaway and Matthew Seminoff tipped in Logan Stankoven’s shot off the faceoff.

In the third period, Blazers goaltender Dylan Ernst had to stand on his head with 25 saves. He would only allow the one goal halfway through the third en route to a 5-1 win. Sydor tipped in his second goal of the game before Stankoven put the puck in the empty net from the blue line.

The Blazers improved their record to 28-10-4-2 on the 2022-23 WHL season, good for 62 points in 44 games. They’re first in the B.C. Division and trail the Winterhawks for first in the Western Conference by nine points with two games in hand.

Next up is a Friday (Feb. 3) home game against the Prince Albert Raiders. Puck drop is at 7 p.m. from Sandman Centre.
