COLLINS: NDP needs a new name

Jan 22, 2023 | 6:00 AM

THE LIBERALS HAVE BECOME the B.C. United Party. A rebranding as it were, to prevent confusion between this party and the federal Liberal Party, to show that the provincial party is its own entity. It never was confusing for me but apparently, it was necessary in the party’s eyes.

Maybe it’s time for the NDP to do the same. And if they like those three letters, how about this? The New Democratic Party, which is neither new nor is it necessarily democratic, becomes the No Da**n Progress Party.

So much has been promised, whether it be flood planning, wildfire mitigation planning, to solving the health crisis, to arbitrarily putting undue pressure on landlords and municipalities to deal with housing issues.

When the Premier was sworn in, he announced his 100-day plan to bring B.C. back. Since then, he has thrown money around in bits and pieces, but without a lot of the support services necessary to make the plans work.

It reminds me of one of those slow-moving agricultural sprinklers you see on big fields, seemingly taking forever to get to the next point on the timer where it moves over a little bit to hit the next bit of dry grass. But if the ground hasn’t been properly prepared, you can sprinkle all you want, but there will not be an abundant harvest.

Now the Premier probably hasn’t seen one of those sprinklers, because I don’t think he has thought much about any area outside of Greater Vancouver and Victoria. Sadly, that will probably continue.

I still believe that the Premier is planning a late spring election. My scenario is that we will have a budget full of the usual promises of large expenditures, then the need for an election because the government needs to have the “support” of the general population for its plan.

In the meantime, that sprinkler will continue to move slowly around in that big circle, while we wait for some real progress on health care, homelessness, the economy, and things that really matter.

But what do I know? I’m just an old guy tilting at windmills like Don Quixote.

I’m Doug Collins and that’s One Man’s Opinion.
