KAMLOOPS — Local residents who don’t have access to skating equipment have had a barrier to that leisure activity removed.

In a news release issued Wednesday (Jan. 18), PLAYKamloops – a group that commits to building an active, healthy and physically literate community – says it received a $10,800 grant to purchase skates, skate guards, helmets and cleaning materials for skate rentals at Valleyview Arena.

“Thanks to the Kamloops Sports Legacy Fund grant, we were able to purchase skating equipment that allows more community members to explore the ice. Ice and snow are a wonderful part of our natural playground and an important part of the physical literacy journey in our area,” Jodi Lebourdais, PlayCoordinator at PLAYKamloops says. “We are really excited to have the City continue to support us with this initiative.”

The City of Kamloops says skates will be available for rent for $3 a pair at Valleyview Arena during public skating times. Guests are encouraged to bring a helmet with them and are reminded that they are mandatory for children under the age of 13.
