Winter shelter opens for people experiencing homelessness in Salmon Arm
SALMON ARM, B.C. — People experiencing homelessness in Salmon Arm will soon have access to a warm, safe place to sleep during the winter months.
In a news release issued Tuesday (Jan. 17) morning, the B.C. government says a new winter shelter for nearly 20 people at the Downtown Activity Centre at 451 Shuswap St. will be open from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. daily.
The province says it’s funding the shelter through BC Housing, and it will be operated by the Canadian Mental Health Association Shuswap Revelstoke. The province says guests at the new shelter will have access to warm meals, hygiene facilities, off-site warming centres during the day and referrals to health services.
The space in the Downtown Activity Centre has been leased by BC Housing from Jan. 1 until April 30, 2023.
