SOUND OFF: Gratitude and praise for our holiday helpers

Dec 15, 2022 | 1:55 PM

AS MANY OF YOU TAKE some well-deserved time to relax and spend quality time with your loved ones this holiday season, there are many people in our province who will be on the job, selflessly giving their time and making sacrifices to take care of others.

I’m thinking about the first responders and emergency workers who are always there for us in our times of great need. Our doctors, nurses, paramedics and other health care workers continue to cope with unprecedented challenges. From the COVID-19 pandemic to the drug toxicity crisis, to the current flood of respiratory viruses and shortage of children’s medications — there remains a lot of stress on their shoulders right now. It’s important that they know they have our support and that we appreciate the outstanding work they do every day.

Our food banks, Christmas hamper organizers, and other social service agencies are also stretched very thin right now. Staff and volunteers are working hard to secure enough donations to ensure they can meet the increased demand they are seeing this year, as many British Columbians struggle with rising costs. These workers are going above and beyond to ensure everyone in our communities can enjoy a nice Christmas and have some stability during these challenging times.

As you go about your holiday visiting and shopping, please be kind and considerate of our store clerks, grocery employees, mail carriers, bus and taxi drivers, and all other workers helping you get what you need or where you need to be. It can certainly be a busy and stressful time of year, but everyone delivering goods and services throughout the holidays deserves our respect and appreciation.

Finally, be kind to yourself this season. Focus on the quality time spent with family and loved ones, and the people who mean the most to you. Take some time to relax, recharge, and reflect on the year that was. It was a difficult year for many of us, but I encourage everyone to approach 2023 with a spirit of optimism and hope for what’s ahead. I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and all the best in the new year.
