KAMLOOPS — Christmas Amalgamated is a Kamloops tradition but this year their phone lines have been down resulting in a significant loss of service.

Fortunately, this past week they got their phone line back up and running.

“We’ve finally gotten our phone lines in and, of course, it’s making us a lot busier because now people are starting to know where we are and are starting to figure out where we are and can get a hold of us to ask questions they need answered so it’s a real relief,” says program coordinator Sally Whitson.

Now that the phone number is working again, Whitson and her team are in full gear preparing for Christmas to distribute the items to low-income families.

Despite being busier than ever now that business has picked up, Whitson says they will still be behind due to the setback.

“We’ve actually had up to 2,000 families [in the past] so it’s just a case of whatever the need is, we’ll find a way of taking care of it.”

Len Jorgensen has made donations of toys through the program and says he knows people really need this service for the holidays.

“It’s well needed so to be able to do this for families to have that excitement for their children on Christmas makes us happy.”

Jorgensen added that right now when locals are being hit with inflation — some families may not be able to afford toys and that is where Christmas Amalgamated comes in.

“The donations for Christmas is more important than ever there’s a lot of families that their budgets are stretched with how much food is right now and with the price of gas and heating and all that stuff so the more we can give the better,” says Jorgensen.

Whitson says she knows Kamloops will continue their support for the program right up until Christmas.

“This is Kamloops, Kamloops has never given up. Whenever there is a problem, when I’m short food, when I’m short toys, whatever I’m short as soon as they know about it they’re here helping out.”

For those looking to get involved with the program either by donating or are in need of the service, Christmas Amalgamated’s phone number is 250-376-0777.
