COLLINS: Where’s the Christmas cheer?

Dec 11, 2022 | 6:55 AM

SO MANY HEADLINES talking about crime and negativity, so few stories about happy and kind goings-on. News roundups almost exclusively filled with stories of shooting rampages, young people grabbing guns from home and indiscriminately shooting people. Home invasions, gang crimes. A litany that seems to be getting worse every day. Politicians so widely separated in their views, and in some countries so filled with hate, that it’s a question of how democracy can survive. Climate change so rampant that some small island nations are in danger of sinking under the rising seas.

As we approach several significant religious holidays, believers are hopeful there’s a miracle in the offing to effect some change.

I don’t know if the media contributes to the problem. After all, we choose what stories we’re going to write about and air. But we don’t just pick the worst stories to follow. Although the old cliche “if it bleeds, it leads” is still alive in a world where the ratings war is more prevalent than ever.

Yet among all this negativity, there are good things going on.

Mostly they are little things. Random acts of kindness. The Salvation Army Kettle program. The KTW Christmas Cheer Fund, having a get-together with friends for coffee, or having them over for dinner, looking at all the craft fairs, events by the Kamloops Symphony and other orchestras, events by Western Canada Theatre, school Christmas concerts, donating time and money to help those in need, volunteering to help at warming centers and shelters.

There are plenty of opportunities to feel some good vibes in the tumultuous times we’re going through.

Sometimes we are so caught up with the bad news, we lose sight of the good. We might have to search a little harder for it, but it’s there, and it’s worth looking for.
