City of Kamloops to collect garbage and recycling separately in 2023

KAMLOOPS – The City of Kamloops will have two separate trucks collect garbage and recycling in 2023.

In a news release issued Thursday (Dec. 1), the city says it will put the dual-pass collection system into effect in January 2023 after running a trial period over the past few months. It replaces the system where a single truck collects both garbage and recycling into a load separated with a divider.

According to the city, the dual-pass system is expected to lessen the chance of contamination in the loads, such as garbage winding up in recycling. While the routes for each truck will be longer in the dual-pass system, the city says the total distance travelled will be less as each truck will only need to unload at one location — either the recycling deport or the landfill — instead of both.

While both garbage and recycling will be collected on the same day, the city says they may not be collected at the same time.
