KAMLOOPS — Being the projected number one overall pick in the NHL draft brings with it a bit of a circus. Over the past few weeks, Connor Bedard has been selling out arenas across British Columbia from Victoria to Vancouver — and tonight the Sandman Centre in Kamloops.

With fanfare at an all-time high in Bedard’s home province of B.C., the opposing teams and the league have been reaping the rewards. WHL Commissioner Ron Robison stated Bedard is a once-in-a-generation talent for the league.

“Connor is a special talent and he has been fun to watch for all our fans across the WHL. But it’s particularly special when it’s the first time he’s had the opportunity to play in his home province in B.C., and the impact has been incredible. We’ve not really seen this before in our history where a player like this has had not only the impact on the ice but as well generating the type of support across all of our markets in B.C.,” said Robison.

The impact of Bedard playing in B.C. is greatly increased by the fact he wasn’t able to play in the province during the COVID-19 pandemic, and will likely be out of the league next season.

Robison also noted how deep the WHL talent pool will be at the draft in June, beyond just Bedard.

“He’s an exceptional talent and we are very, very excited to have him in our league and he has proven already at a young age what type of player he is. But, we have a tremendous crop of young players this year eligible for this years draft, arguably one of the best in our history as well. In addition to Connor, there is some tremendous talent throughout the league and we are excited looking forward to this years NHL draft,” said Robison.
