WolfPack men’s basketball on the hunt for first win of the season

KAMLOOPS — The TRU WolfPack Men’s Basketball team has had a rocky start to the 2022-23 season, with no wins in four games. However, slow starts aren’t new for the WolfPack, who historically rely on good fundamentals and team play to win ball games.

“We aren’t as athletic as some of the teams in the league, so we have to rely on execution,” Assistant Coach Ted Murray explains. “Execution is something that isn’t going to happen right away. It feels like we’re a little bit behind where we want to be in execution, but we’re really hoping to take a big step forward in valuing every possession this weekend.”

Despite that lack of success, the players don’t seem worried. That’s because this team is a tight-knit group, and believe if they stick together, the wins will come.

“Everyone gets along. It makes us really excited to get to work and get to practice. We can trust everybody,” third-year forward Asher Mayan says. “Especially right now, it helps up bounce back from tougher games or mistakes that we made. We want to make sure guys know we can push through adversity like this.”

The ‘Pack lost forward Thomas Olsen to a high-ankle sprain last Friday against the UBC Okanagan Heat. For a team that doesn’t have a deep bench, to begin with, that loss means it’s next man up. TRU heads to Alberta this weekend, as they’ll take on the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns in a pair of games they would very much like to win.

“It’d be a huge confidence boost, for sure,” Mayan says. “That’s what we’re looking for — we don’t want to focus on the past, we want to focus on the present, and those wins are within reach and with good weeks of practice, I think we can do good things”

Just two weekends of competition remain for the ‘Pack before exams and the winter break, against Lethbridge and Grant MacEwen University — teams that are also struggling to find success. While those four games aren’t quite “must-win” for TRU, the coaching staff knows how important it will be to head into that break with some wins.

“It is our goal to make the playoffs, and if we don’t pick up a number of wins in the next few weeks, we’re really going to be behind the eight ball,” Murray says. “Our schedule is backloaded with UBC, Manitoba and UVic in the second half of the year. There’s three of the best team in the league, so we really need to pick up some wins in our next few.”
