O’Leary says the chamber has been working with all levels of government on this policy and he’s had the opportunity to go to Ottawa to speak to the federal Housing Minister.

He adds that the chamber is trying to get more than 500 signatures for the petition but says the ultimate goal is to receive national recognition.

“It’s a tax policy so we need to get in front of a federal finance committee. That is what we’re doing — a push for right now. It looks like we’re probably going to have a meeting lined up when they table the new budget. But in the meantime, we need to demonstrate to the government how important this is to every Canadian and that’s why we want as many signatures as possible for this electronic petition.”

The chamber will now wait to hear from the federal government on what the next steps are in order to tackle the affordable housing crisis in the city.
