Work resumes at Highland Valley copper mine following safety shutdown

Nov 17, 2022 | 8:03 AM

KAMLOOPS – Unionized workers at TECK’s Highland Valley Copper are back on the job today following a work stoppage earlier this week.

Sources confirmed members of the United Steelworkers 7619 refused work at the Logan Lake area mine after a safety scare Monday. A huge mining shovel had fallen off its stands.

In a statement Wednesday afternoon (Nov. 16), company officials stated the mine’s leadership team was engaged in discussions with the union to allow for a safe resumption of operations. The details of those discussions haven’t been released.

The mine is expected to produce up to 133,000 tonnes of copper this year and up to 160,000 tonnes of copper in the years 2023 to 2025.
