ASK Wellness would participate in good faith third-party review: Hughes

KAMLOOPS — The head of a Kamloops social agency says his organization would open itself to a third-party review — on certain conditions.

ASK Wellness Executive Director Bob Hughes made a presentation at the newly elected Kamloops council’s first regular meeting Tuesday afternoon (Nov. 15).

Hughes has been in the crosshairs of some in the community for ASK’s part in the social disorder seen on Kamloops streets. Among his critics are Mayor Reid Hamer-Jackson.

Before winning election, Hamer-Jackson campaigned on a promise to push B.C. Housing to fund a third-party review of supportive housing facilities.

Hughes told him he would welcome such a review if it was conducted in good faith.

“We were part of a review in Penticton and, interestingly enough, initially we as the leadership team weren’t asked to necessarily participate. We made sure we [did] to be able to highlight what we see are some of the challenges with operating supportive housing,” said Hughes.

“If it is simply to condemn what we don’t know about when we don’t like what we see, I think it would be very difficult for us to participate. But if it’s in the spirit of working together to improve our system of care, I would be the first one to participate in any effort to do so.”
