Nicola region likely to be impacted by wildfire smoke: Environment Canada
MERRITT, B.C. — Residents in the Nicola region – including Merritt, Strump Lake, Pennask Lake, and Brookmere – are likely to be impacted by wildfire smoke over the next 24 to 48 hours.
Environment Canada also issued a special air quality statement for the Fraser Canyon, Fraser Valley, and Similkameen regions Thursday (Oct. 6) morning.
While wildfire smoke is a natural part of the environment, Environment Canada says exposure to it can affect people’s health. People with pre-existing health conditions, respiratory infections such as COVID-19, older adults, pregnant women and infants, children, and sensitive individuals are more likely to experience health effects from smoke exposure.
The weather agency says smoke conditions change quickly over short distances and can vary hour-by-hour.
