KAMLOOPS — In honour of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the City of Kamloops has raised the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc flag permanently at City Hall.

On Friday (Sept. 30), ceremonies were held across Canada for the day honouring the lives lost and the trauma caused by the Residential School system.

In Kamloops, Tkwenem7íple7 Nikki Fraser (Acting Kúkpi7) and Mayor Ken Christian raised the flag on the flagpole located north of the City Hall parking lot.

“Tḱemlúps te Secwépemc is proud to share this moment with the City of Kamloops. We continue to walk together taking steps towards reconciliation,” said Tkwenem7íple7 Fraser.

“On September 30, we want everyone to acknowledge and commemorate the history and ongoing trauma of residential schools. We honour all those who were lost and all the survivors and intergenerational survivors who continue to suffer the impacts of residential schools,” Fraser added.

Shortly, a second flagpole will be installed adjacent to the current pole to fly the City of Kamloops flag.

“The flags flying side-by-side are a visual representation of the strong relationship and joint responsibilities to the land and its people,” the city release reads.
